Stephen Gallagher This is the best release, to date, from Box Of Hammers. Excellent textures, performances and a real confidence about the material. The trio of last tracks, Sunset, Crossing By Boat and Reflection are super lovely. Favorite track: Crossing by Boat.

Jono Baddiley The Lake plays like an antipodean Scandi-noir, opening with unease with "Arrival" and "Wanderlust", finding hope in the crescendo of "Summer Haze" and "Sunset", and a conclusion in "Reflection". The album is a great late-night ambient companion, and works really well with those super-slow motion screen savers that you find on Apple TV boxes. Favourite track : "Summer Haze"

about

Strange Behaviour present The Lake, the debut album from Te Whanganui-a-Tara based musician Box of Hammers.

First featured on our Ambient Maladies compilation, the Box of Hammers project has evolved into a swirling maelstrom of droning guitar, mutated synths, ancient instruments and randomly discovered sounds.

The work of John Kingston, an experienced musician and current band member of shoegazers Hail, Meteor! and ambient dreamscapers Filtersphere, this solo project envisions a stormy night spent in a cabin by a lake. An imaginary soundtrack to a film that never existed. A haunting yet poetic work that reflects on the environment, equally beautiful and uplifting, yet also dark and traumatic.

Inspired by the exemplary soundtracks of Ennio Morricone, John Carpenter and Angelo Badalamenti, and seeking a more intimate space to explore music following the demise of his infamous psychedelic funk group the Hairy Lollies, JK began sharing his new project in intimate spaces such as art galleries and warehouses yet has recently performed in festival settings – bringing these blissfully epic compositions to life on the live stage.

One thing that’s clear when entering the realm of Box of Hammers, JK knows his studio inside and out. Besides the impeccably constructed guitar tones sits a plethora of pedals, filters, and additional processes lend the music a healthy dose of mysticism among the minimalism, layered with an otherworldly quality.

The Lake was recorded at Waikanae Beach, an ex-jewellery safe and in JK’s studio in Pōneke.
